Susan B. Anthony
Soprano
American Soprano Susan B. Anthony has scored recent successes as Senta with the Berlin Staatsoper and in the title roles in Fidelio and Salome in Hamburg this past winter. Most recently she appeared as Marietta in the new production of Die Tote Stadt at the Liceu in Bareclona. Among other recent successes are the roles of Sieglinde at the Vienna Staatsoper, and the Kaiserin in Dresden She has also performed Fidelio in Vienna, Washington, and Rome. She was Berlin's new Salome
and also performed in their Lohengrin, conducted by Christian Thielemann. She was also "thrilling" as Salome in a concert performance with the Israel Philharmonic under Maestro Mehta in summer 2002. Her CD "PORTRAIT" was released on Arte Nova to glowing reviews.
Other career highlights include her Senta in Madrid with Maestro Barenboim, Elsa in Lohengrin at the Opera de Paris, Bastille, as well as at the Vienna Staatsoper, and Ariadne in a new production in Dresden under Sir Colin Davis, televised live throughout Europe several years ago. Fall 2001 had her in Vienna for Salome, having performed Ariadne in Paris and Amsterdam with the Vienna Philharmonic (Dohnányi) just prior. She also made her "sensational" New York debut in a new production of Der Fliegender Holländer opening the New York City Opera's 2001-2002 season, and performed Die Irische Legende in München during their festival. As Brünhilde in Siegfried in Genève she "showed why she is the most important of the European sopranos.." She also had triumphs in Bologna as Salome (Maestro Gatti) and as Ariadne at La Scala (Sinopoli). She has also recorded Traumgörge with James Conlon for EMI.
Born and raised in Michigan, Ms. Anthony has won acclaim in leading theaters throughout Europe including: La Scala, Berlin Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Teatro dell'Opera Roma, Teatro La Fenice, La Monnaie Brussels, Montpellier, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Dresden, Vienna and the Bastille in Paris. Opernwelt named her "Singer of the Year" in 1995 for her Maria in Strauss' Friedenstag in Dresden and again in 1997 for her portrayal of Genièvre in the seldom-performed Chausson Opera, Le Roi Arthus in Köln.
Other significant appearances have included Strauss' Guntram at the Festival de Radio France, Montpellier, and Le Roi Arthus at the Bregenzer Festspiele. Equally comfortable in concert and recital, Ms. Anthony has performed with Maestri: Pierre Boulez, James Conlon, Sir Colin Davis, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Wolfgang Sawallisch.
In 2006 and 2007 Ms. Anthony performs in Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, and she returns to New York City Opera this coming fall in a revival of their Tote Stadt.
