Iride Martinez
Soprano
Costa Rican born coloratura soprano Iride Martinez performs in a gala concert with Placido Domingo in her native Costa Rica this fall. She portrayed Adina and in a gala concert at the Sigulda Festival in Latvia this past summer. Last spring she debuted at La Scala for Lorin Maazel's 1984. She also debuted at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as an "electrifying" Lucia last winter. Last fall she performed the world-premier production of La Hija del Cielo in Las Palmas followed by performances in Valencia with Loren Maazel and the Faure Requiem in her return to MDR Leipzig. She appeared in Köln as "the indisputable star in the role of Cleopatra" in Giulio Cesare last spring and in concerts in Valencia with Lorin Maazel. Just prior she sang with MDR Leipzig and continued with gala concerts wiht the Bremer Philharmoniker. Last year she was in Glyndeborurne as the lead soprano Titania in the Glyndebourne Festival's Midsummer Night's Dream
and she performed her first La Sonnambula at the Sigulda Festival in Lativa. She was also Konstanze for the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos, Lisbon, in their new production as well as for the Semperoper, Dresden. In fall 2005 she performed this role for the Bayerische Staatsoper. She also recently performed a "vocally exciting and dramatically moving" Violetta in Johannesburg. Ms. Martinez began her musical studies in her native Costa Rica, and continued in Los Angeles, Italy and München. She was a winner of the Bilbao Competition in Spain and in the Maria Caniglia competition in Italy. As a member of the Köln ensemble she performed numerous roles in her repertoire. Her international breakthrough came in 1998 with a critically-acclaimed interpretation of the role of Viola in the world premiere of Trojahn's Was Ihl Wollt in Bayerische Staatsoper, München, earning her Young Artist of the Year 1998 award from the critics. In 1999 she performed Zerbinetta in the Semperoper Dresden's new production of Ariadne, conducted by Sir Colin Davis, and televised "live" throughout Europe. She was invited back as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, and has returned to perform there on numerous occasions. Other significant roles that have since entered her repertoire include Giulietta in Capuleti, Lucia, Gilda, Adina, Norina, and finally, Violetta.
In 2000 Iride had a great triumph at the Bregenz Festival as Queen Schemacha in their new production of Rimsky-Korsakov's Golden Cockerel. In 2002 she appeared as Marfa in The Tsar's Bride at the Vienna Konzerthaus and portrayed Semele in the Salzburg Festival's new production of Die Liebe der Danae. She returned to the Salzburg Festival as Konstanze in 2003, and performed concerts there in 2004. Other recent appearances have included the Spoleto Festival, Rome Opera, Orchestras of Santa Cecilia and RAI Torino in Italia, the Zurich Opera, the Lucerne Festival, the Palais Garnier and Bastille in Paris, the Münchner Philharmoniker, Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic in Germany. In summer 2004 she appeared at the Klangbogen Festival, Vienna, as Queen Maria Luisa together with Placido Domingo in Menotti's Goya.
Just after her concert with Domingo, Ms. Martinez performs concerts of Hummel's Mathilde de Guise in France. Upcoming this season is her appearance in Bilbao as Marie in La Fille du Regiment (with Florez) and in coming seasons she returns to La Scala, performs at Covent Garden as Norina (Maestro Mackerras) and with the Chatelet in Paris in 1984 with Maazel.
